When considering a new garage door installation or making improvements to your existing door, there are many choices – both in design and function – that have to be taken into account. Windows or no windows? Sectional or rolling door? Garage door opener or not? One of the more important considerations relates to insulation. Should you invest in an insulated garage door? This obviously brings about added cost and if you’re not sure what advantages the insulation will bring, you might think it’s an added cost not worth bearing.
Our Arvada garage door installation team has completed hundreds of overhead door installations since 2002, and we’ve seen first-hand the impacts that an insulated door can have. Below we’re going to talk about some of the main benefits you can expect to experience should you invest in one.
Whether you opt for a new door or have an existing door modified to add insulation to it, you can expect to see the following benefits after the work is complete.
The garage is a space in which most people tend to make quite a lot of noise. You might have a workshop set up in there, a home gym or you might even love smashing a set of drums. Lots of folks think that insulated garage doors are just about saving heat and energy, overlooking what they can do in terms of noise pollution. With an insulated garage door, however, you won’t have to worry so much about annoying the neighbors or about them annoying you, as an insulated garage door is thicker and blocks out a lot of that noise. So not as much of it will make its way outside if you’re producing it, and not as much will make its way inside if someone outside is making a racket.
Between them, home heating and cooling account for close to 30% of the average home’s energy consumption according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). A garage door that is either poorly insulated or that offers no insulation whatsoever lets warm air in during the summer and lets it escape in the winter, meaning your HVAC system has to work much harder to maintain a pleasant temperature in your garage for you. And guess what? That extra energy used costs money.
For optimal results, you should think about insulating your entire garage, including all exposed walls. But if that's a project that's a little too big at this point in time, insulating your garage door is a great start, as it's one of the main “weak points” through which energy is lost.
When you compare the design and construction of an uninsulated garage door to an insulated garage door, unsurprisingly there's quite a difference. Insulated garage doors boast several extra layers that not only make them more energy-efficient, but more durable too. They’re able to better resist changing weather conditions, and are less likely to be dented, fall foul of rust or warp.
These characteristics mean that the chances of you needing garage door repair help are lessened and the door is likely to last a lot longer, both of which save you a significant amount of money in the long run.
Some people spend lots of time in their garage. I know I do. If that’s you, you don’t want to be shivering in the middle of winter, having to wear gloves inside. Equally, you don’t want to be sweating profusely in summer. You want the time you spend in your garage doing whatever you’re doing to be enjoyable. And for that, you need to have a comfortable temperature inside it.
An insulated garage door will go a long way to providing you with that. As I mentioned a little earlier, they vastly improve the energy efficiency of any garage space, which means drafts are prevented and the interior temperature is easier to maintain at a constant level.
Not to repeat myself, but those extra layers are not only useful for boosting energy efficiency. An uninsulated door may be made up of just a single layer, which is far more vulnerable to damage by a potential burglar, who then may be able to gain access to your garage and its contents.
An insulated garage door on the other hand is typically made up of two or even three layers, which presents far more of a challenge for any intruder to break into. If you then combine this door with additional safety measures such as an alarm system, any time you’re away from home you can feel safe in the knowledge that anyone is going to have a very hard time getting inside.
As you can now see, there are a lot of very attractive benefits to having an insulated door installed or having insulation added to your current door. It should be said that there are some things on the other side of the argument to consider, such as the increased cost in the short term, but this is outweighed by the long-term cost savings.
